About

Turntable Market will provide an affordable venue for startup local food service entrepreneurs to market and sell directly to the Woodstock community and visitors. Located at 499 Maxham Meadow Way, adjacent to the old Woodstock Railroad “turntable,” the site will offer a variety of options for “mobile food vendors”, including spaces for food trucks and modular kiosks to accommodate the earliest-stage food service entrepreneurs. The Turntable Market can provide a stepping stone for small or upstart chefs or food service entrepreneurs who want to develop their concept, grow their skills, following, and sales before potentially transitioning into a brick-and-mortar location.

The Challenge

Why do we need philanthropic funds? Simply put: the for-profit business model is weak. Woodstock completely lacks affordable commercial spaces for start-up food vendors. We have modeled out many different scenarios for investing in the necessary infrastructure and maintaining the site, and none of them allow for affordable leases/rental fees for vendors. We have hosted mobile food vendors in the past and we did not come close to breaking even fiscally. At the same time, Woodstock faces a restaurant shortage for lunch and busy tourist periods.

To turn this dream of building a lasting community resources, we seek to provide clean public restrooms to the East End Park area, with water and power to serve our kiosks and the neighborhood.

The Solution

We envision an outdoor marketplace at 499 Maxham Meadow in the East End. A series of well-designed kiosks would be available to food entrepreneurs to offer something new for the Woodstock community and a place to gather.

With this an affordable and supportive business incubation space, Turntable Market will provide mobile food service entrepreneurs to develop and grow sustainable small businesses through reduced overhead and shared infrastructure.

The Impact

The goal is to make it as easy as possible for earliest-stage vendors to test out their vision at a rate that could support their startup’s success. This low-risk opportunity will enable these food entrepreneurs to test a concept, build a following, and grow sales before making the leap into a brick-and-mortar location.

By expanding access to diverse and accessible food options for local residents and visitors, Turntable Market strengthens the local economy, activates an underutilized community space, and contributes to the vitality of a small rural town that serves a tourism-based economy.

Project Plans and Support

Turntable Market holds a conditional use permit for mobile food vendors, April through Wassail Weekend, until 9pm.
