Enhancing and maintaining Woodstock Village parks and connectors
About
Outdoor public spaces are economic drivers for community engagement and tourism. The condition of parks, sidewalks, and public squares communicates civic competency, commitment, and values. Woodstock Village Conservancy imagines well-kept landscaped public spaces, connected by safe and accessible pathways, that welcome residents to use, appreciate, and support and encourage visitors to explore and enjoy.
It will accomplish this through
- collaboration with the municipality, local businesses, non-profits, and individual volunteers,
- funding from private and public sources, and
- implemention and transparent reporting of activities.
September 2024
Woodstock Village Conservancy has a logo and a project team! We are still looking for team members but the current group met for the first time on August 29 and has identified next steps including consensus that our first project should be the rehabilitation of The Green. We have introduced WVC to our major partners and received overwhelming support for our vision and plans. Looking ahead: We will be developing concepts and costs for rehabilitation of The Green, expanding outreach, and researching grants. The Challenge
The 2023 Woodstock Town Plan seeks to be a steward of the land. Yet, with aging school and municipal buildings, an inadequate water system, and failing sewage treatment plant, care of public spaces is a low priority municipal operating expense. In addition, the decentralized municipal and non-profit management results in underserviced areas, inconsistent or insufficient maintenance, discontinuity between areas, and limited expertise and resources for big or complicated projects.
The Solution
Woodstock Village Conservancy will focus on placemaking within the Village of Woodstock. Placemaking is defined as the planning, design and management of public spaces, capitalizing on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that improve urban vitality and promote people's health, happiness, and well-being.
The Impact
Woodstock Village Conservancy recognizes that our plans are ambitious and will require patience, communication, and collaboration. We anticipate the impact to take several years to manifest but relish the community-oriented process that will get us there. Essentially, Woodstock Village Conservancy believes that a centralized management model can provide a single point of contact and resources for complicated or large projects, improve under-resourced areas, and present a consistent, safe, and accessible visitor and resident experience.
Project Plans and Support
Woodstock Village Conservancy will adapt to the needs and desires of stakeholders to enhance and maintain public spaces that serve and inspire our community and its visitors by creating and implementing, with partner entities, a roadmap to leverage and manage community resources and stimulate philanthropy to fund major projects and maintenance.
